An original U.S., Model 1816, percussion conversion or replacement bayonet. It has a “T” shaped mortise slot in socket, and a full length blade fuller. It is stamped “U.S.” on the shank. These bayonets were issued with many of the U.S. manufactured 1816 muskets that were converted to percussion, in the 1850’s, for the American Civil War. This variant, of the 1816 bayonet, in all probability saw service in the Civil War.
